Finding a way to help women Canadian basketball coaches grow professionally is Job No. 1

News of the hiring of Victor Lapena yesterday as the head coach of Canada’s senior women’s basketball team was a long time coming – the qualification tournament for this year’s World Cup is about a month away and that’ s not a lot of prep time for any coach let alone one brand new to the players, the coaches, the country.

I don’t know what kind of coach he is except that I have great respect for the Spanish development program that he comes from – Jorge Garbajosa runs a successful ship there and Spain has success at every level — and coaching at Fenerbache puts him under the greater umbrella of old friend Maurizio Gherardini and that’s definitely a plus in my books.
