Todd: Canada’s female athletes had a big year. They still need more support

With the year winding down and few Canadians paying attention on the last Monday before Christmas, swimmer and Olympic gold medallist Maggie Mac Neil set a short-course world record in the 50-metre backstroke in Abu Dhabi.

It was an entirely appropriate coda to Canada’s Year of the Woman in sports, a year when pandemic-driven urgency changed the face of the games we watch at a vastly accelerated pace. If male professional sports remain an unshakable colossus from the NFL to the Premiership to the NHL, there are changes and they don’t always involve the fact that more people are watching more women play more sports.
