‘Love of the game’: Val Ackerman, new Hall of Famer, key contributor to basketball history

Night after night, a bright lantern dangles from a dogwood tree outside of a Pennington, New Jersey, home so that a tall, athletic teenage girl can see what she is doing. With a basketball in hand and a hoop in sight, she polishes her skills on the chance her immense talent would one day lead into a career working in her favorite sport.

The obsession is sustained. Dribbling, shooting, passing for hours without a regard for who’s watching or who’s doubting. But the daughter of a high school athletics director is laser-focused, schooling other kids in the neighborhood before doing the same against her opponents while attending Hopewell Valley Central High School.
