Brittney Griner latest: Phoenix Mercury set for US State Dept. briefing and Hall of Famer calls for release

The coach of the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, Vanessa Nygaard, told reporters after their game on Sunday that the team was expecting to be briefed by the US State Department Monday on the latest efforts to bring team member Brittney Griner home from Russia, where she has been detained since February.

In May, a State Department official confirmed to CNN that they had officially classified Griner as “wrongfully detained” and announced her case is being handled by the office of the US Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs (SPEHA), Roger Carstens. Read More
